BETWEEN DREAM AND REALITY

Born and raised in the province, I spent many days and week ends in Venice ever since I was a young child. My mother brought us to visit our grandparents, aunts and huncles and cousins and it was with them I started living the city, this place where everybody beckons in the streets, where the so-called “campi” are meeting points, where walking is normality- once I read that is the city with the lower number of heart attacks!
On Sundays it was such a great joy going to Zattere and eat the famous Gianduiotto by Nico, which is still a must, the most caloric and tasty ice cream you can imagine. And I can’t forget about uncle Antonio’s stories, he was a taxi-driver. He told us who the actors he carried in the cab were, such a real narrations to project us directly into the movies. Because in Venice, anything can happen: you can meet Julia Roberts jogging, Woody Allen sat on the table on your side, shake your hand to magnates and regnants coming from all over the world – during a Festival of Cannes a few years ago, I have been hosted by Paul Allen, ex partner with Bill Gates, in his Octopus yacht, and this is just an example.
During 1998 I was working for one of all the movies played out here in this wonderful place and for four months I was John Schofield’s personal assistant during the Italian shoot of ‘I dreamed of Africa’, starring Kim Basinger. I often went with Rochelle, the producer’s wife, to Rialto’s market, and together with her I found so many corners, stores, curiosities. Venice is history, legend, fairy tale, dream. It is celebration, art, magic, culture, real life but with an edge on imagination.
It is my honor to talk about the shades of this city, and a desire for a long time, because I think that it is a fortune to live here, for one day or all life long.
